I took a trip over to the Indian grocery store yesterday with my friend Jiten to help me make sense of all the stuff there I have never seen before.  I don’t go crazy over Indian food, but now and again I want to live on the edge and eat something ridiculously spicy, or weird, or both.  Here are a few pictures of some of the food stuffs we bought at the store, and something in the next week will be made using something I bought. I’m thinking a comparison of frozen Naan and some recipe I can find online plus some sort of Curry or Dal.  I also bought some saffron for a decent price that is in need of a good dish to use it in.

For now, my apartment smells something like an Indian bazaar due to testing out a bunch of the things we bought the first night: Spicy puff sticks that are something like Andy Capp fries but 5 times hotter, paper-like green chili bread that you microwave and tastes like dirt, burning a stick of vanilla incense,  more spicy grain based snacks, and spices for spiced tea (masala chai).  The tea was really the only thing that was spicy that I liked.  Oh and some cookies and sugar coated fennel seeds-they are actually pretty good.  One last thing, check the expiration dates if you go to these stores: I bought a can of these cottage cheese like balls soaked in sugar water (Rasmalai) that is 1 year past the expiration date. Not a chance of that ever passing my lips, especially when many of the packages boast about how they are packaged in sanitary conditions and meet all of the food safety regulations…shouldn’t this be assumed?
